Ingrowing Toenail Surgery

We can remove troublesome toenails that are digging in and causing pain or infection.

Surgery for ingrowing toenails is carried out under local anaesthetic and involves using special scissors to remove the problematic edge of the nail. No stitching is involved. The area is then treated with sterile phenol to try to help prevent the nail from regrowing in future. The whole procedure takes about 30 minutes.

It may be useful to wear open toe or loose fitting shoes to allow room for the dressing and arrange a lift home with someone. For the first 72 hours it is advisable to rest and do light activities -no sports. You can take your dressing off in 72 hours, and can then slowly build up to normal activity. You will be provided with a leaflet at the time of your surgery with more detail on aftercare.

You may not be suitable for removal at our clinic if you are diabetic, have a suppressed immune system or take blood thinning medications apart from aspirin, so if you are not sure, please check your suitability with us prior to booking.

Ingrowing toenail surgery is priced at £299 for one toe. This is made up an £89 consultation, a £210 surgery fee, and includes a follow up appointment if required and six weeks of all aftercare.

In around one in three people, the nail may grow back despite phenol treatment. Although it often regrows normally, if it does become ingrown again and a repeat procedure is preferred, please note a standard fee applies.
